I am on the road right now, having just spent two days at The Forks in Maine checking out the Untamed Adventure race. I had the opportunity to check out the competitors gear and learn a bit more about this fast growing sport. However, more importantly, I also had the opportunity to spend some time with the good people of Alpacka Pack Rafts and Hyperlite Mountain Gear.
Alpacka is the world leader in pack rafts, known for their durability and lightness, they are used extensively in the sport of adventure racing; with ultralight hikers and bikepackers. I have my raft in hand and will be doing a number of micro adventures this summer with my Fargo or Mukluk and the raft. They also have now collaborated with Kokatat to produce their own UL drysuit made specifically for the UL community. I should have one in hand later this summer and will do a full review after I have put it through its paces. Upon initial inspection this is exactly what is needed for UL bikepacking/packrafting. Wait until you see how small it stuffs down to and how little it actually weighs.
Hyperlite Mountain Gear is a small cottage shop located in Maine that I have been following for well over a year. They are innovators in the use of cuben fiber for packs and shelters. I will be using a HMG pack over the coming year for a number of my longer distance, more remote trips. They weigh next to nothing and are made of bomber material. Waterproof and light!!
