The Science Barge - Yonkers, NY

We came upon the Science Barge on our last day of rest before paddling into NYC and the Statue of Liberty.  Little did we know how impacted we would all be by this amazing achievement that sits in the middle of a developed Urban area.  The goal of the barge is to act as a living classroom to both kids and adults, demonstrating new and innovative techniques for sustainable farming.  The barge is completely powered by natural forces, mainly relying on wind and solar with biodiesel used only as a backup.​

Led by Captain Bob and a team of volunteers of kids and adults, the barge demonstrates how with a little bit of ingenuity and a lot of determination, you really can change the world.  Captain Bob ​demonstrated some of the great innovations that have come out of the barge, including the use of 'rock wall' to hold in moisture; an inexpensive system of recycling water based on low cost aquarium parts; a solar array that uses no electricity to follow the sun; and my personal favorite, a small clip system that allows large fruit, like cantelope, to grow VERTICALLY.

The barge runs year round and is one of the top destinations for kids and schools looking to learn more about sustainable growing techniques. Having had a chance to sample some of the lettuce and strawberies, I can personally attest to how well it works.  The night before we dined at one of the local Italian restaurants that sources fresh herbs from the barge when they are in season.  Throughout the year, produce that is grown is actively distributed into the community and those that are in need.
