I have to say, as hard as I try, I think the Mukluk is the single nicest bike I have ever owned. Factoring in everything, including its ability to go anywhere makes it just an amazing machine. I think of replacing my donated Fargo often, and then I think, where would I ride its replacement that I would not ride the Mukluk. Don't get me wrong, if money were no object and bikes were falling from the sky, then I would have a garage full of them, along with a few other high powered two wheel toys. But.....
That is not the case, and right now, I only have one bike and I can't come up with a reason why it can't do almost everything to a level that suits my needs. For all of my adventure touring, simply slapping on a set of lighter weight tires and wheels would go along way to making it a lighter fighting machine. My Fargo was an awesome touring machine, but it could not do thick sand, nor would it have held up to any type of real snow. On the road however, it was the bomb, but....
For mixed conditions, where there is some road involved and nothing too gnarly, you could make the case that throwing on the Black Floyds is all that is needed to up your speed and make it a bomber road touring rig. I have a mostly road tour in early 2013, perhaps that will be a good proving ground? During my 800 mile Gaspe tour last year, a large portion was on the road and I had no issues whatsoever.
I realize this is a bit of a rant, and maybe more than anything it is me trying to justify not getting something else right now, but as I just finished up a training ride on the beach, coupled with yesterdays training ride on hard pack, and a couple of days before that my ride on mostly road, I find myself struggling with the concept of why on earth I need anything else at this point in my biking life....
All good problems, now go ride!
