Mukluk gets new sneakers and other goodies

This week I was finally able to get my Mukluk converted over to handle larger tires and rims.  The issue had always been chain rub in my lowest 3 gears, something that I found frustrating in the snow and touring in the mountains.  After much research and discussions the solution was to switch out my cranks for the Surly MWOD crankset.

This new setup comes complete with BB, the Surly Whirly Bird Cranks and a modified set of chainrings that forgoes the outer ring, instead pushing the granny and middle into the outer two positions.  The result is gobs of tire/chain clearance.  The bike with new 45North Husker Du's has plenty of room left for even wider tires and bigger rims should I end up needing them.

For now I give up some of the higher end gearing, which for most Fat bike riding, is really not an issue.   The only time I see a problem with that setup is when I am totally rigged for road riding with my new Black Floyd slicks.  I will play around with the configuration for a while and then see if any additional modifications are needed.

Yesterday I got up into the woods of Northern Maine, searching for dirt and fall leaves in hopes of testing out the new setup.  Needless to say, everything worked great and the scenery was stunning.   A special thanks to Bikeman for their great support!!
