Winter Weather
New foal on the farmWell, as any of you know that have been following my trip for the last 30 days know, the winter weather has been one of the big stories. So, not to disappoint anyone, the wintry mix continues. I pulled into visit family on Friday and temps over the weekend were a beautiful 70 plus degrees with blue skies. It was an awesome couple of days and even though I was itching to get back on the road, details of a huge storm were starting to appear. Not wanting to be riding or camping in sleet or freezing rain I had already made the decision to stay the week and relax, fatten up and visit.
Last night I awoke to the sound of high winds and sleet hitting the side of the house. This morning, the ground was covered with a dusting of snow, ice was on the pavement and the temps on my watch (strapped to the bike), showed a cool 26 degrees. As morning progressed to lunch, the sleet stopped and the winds picked up, with gusts up in the 40 mph range. Temperatures all through north Texas are expected to be in the teens later today with the wind chill hovering right around zero. I guess my decision to stay was a good one.
I will sit out this cold weather for the next couple of days and catch a ride down to Austin where I will get the repairs done to the bike and hook back up with the Southern Tier route. If you are located in Austin and have any desire to get together and talk bikes, adventure travel, or the issue of Childhood Obesity, please shoot me an email and we will set something up.
In the meantime I will attempt to eat as much food as possible in anticipation of the upcoming hill country, something guaranteed to challenge my fitness and adventure skills.
