I came accross this quote today while I was looking for a used bicycle to acquire (donations are gladly accepted...):
"The automobile has not merely taken over the street, it has dissolved the living tissue of the city. Its appetite for space is absolutely insatiable; moving and parked, it devours urban land, leaving the buildings as mere islands of habitable space in a sea of dangerous and ugly traffic." - James Marston Fitch, New Yourk Times, Maay 1, 1960
Of particular interest to me is not only how profoundly TRUE this statement is, but note the date! Once again, we have recognized issues early in our culture and yet continued to do NOTHING about them.
