OR Nalgene Insulators

Having read so much about keeping water from freezing in the extreme cold of AK, I have decided to go the route of Nalgene bottles and OR insulators.  In order to begin understanding how these insulators work I ran a 24 hour freeze test yesterday.  To perform the test I placed very cold tap water into the Nalgene bottle and then placed the bottle in the OR insulator.  From there the whole thing was placed in a freezer and left be for 24 hours.

I opened up the insulator this morning and their was nothing more than a thin layer of ice on the surface of the water.  I deliberately did not fill the bottle to the top, nor did I store it upside down (something that I would do in the field).  All in all I am pretty pleased with these results.  Granted, there is a big difference between a 20F freezer and -20F wilderness, but the results are promising.

Next up is figuring out how I am going to carry them.  My initial thought is strapped to my rear rack, but I am not completely sold on that idea.  When the Salsa Rack gets here I will try things out and see what works.
